About Glycymeris americana (DeFrance, 1826)

Glycymeris americana is a bivalve species that produces sturdy, nearly circular, somewhat flattened shells. In warmer waters, its shell valves can grow up to 5 inches (12 centimeters) in diameter, while individuals living in cool waters are much smaller. The shell surface has mottled brown markings over a white background, with low, rounded ribs and visible annual growth rings. The shell margin is slightly serrated, and the shell lacks a pallial sinus. This species lives buried in sand or gravel substrates.
