About Gluphisia septentrionis Walker, 1855
Gluphisia crenata, commonly called the dusky marbled brown, is a moth species belonging to the family Notodontidae. It was first formally described by Eugenius Johann Christoph Esper in 1785. This species is distributed across Europe, extending eastward through regions of Russia and China as far as Japan. It is also found in North America, where populations were historically classified as a separate species under the name Gluphisia septentrionis Walker, 1855. The wingspan of adult Gluphisia crenata ranges from 28 to 34 millimeters. Depending on the location, the moths are active in flight from April to August, producing two generations per year. The larvae of this species feed on Populus tree species, including Populus nigra, Populus balsamifera, and Populus tremula; they also feed on Salix purpurea. Gluphisia crenata displays puddling behavior: they suck up fluid from puddles, pump the fluid through their digestive tract, and excrete it at three-second intervals.
