About Gluphisia crenata (Esper, 1785)
Gluphisia crenata, commonly known as the dusky marbled brown, is a moth species belonging to the family Notodontidae. This species was first formally described by Eugenius Johann Christoph Esper in 1785. Its distribution ranges across Europe, extending east through portions of Russia and China to reach Japan. It also occurs in North America, where it was historically classified as a separate species under the name Gluphisia septentrionis. The wingspan of adult Gluphisia crenata measures between 28 and 34 mm. Depending on the location, adult moths fly from April to August in two generations per year. The larvae of this species feed on species in the genus Populus, including Populus nigra, Populus balsamifera and Populus tremula. They also feed on Salix purpurea. Gluphisia crenata displays puddling behavior: individuals suck fluid from puddles, pump this fluid through their digestive tract, and excrete it at intervals of three seconds.
