About Gloioxanthomyces nitidus (Berk. & M.A.Curtis) Lodge, Vizzini, Ercole & Boertm.
This fungus, scientifically named Gloioxanthomyces nitidus (Berk. & M.A.Curtis) Lodge, Vizzini, Ercole & Boertm., produces fruitbodies with convex apricot-yellow to orange caps that measure 1–4 cm (1⁄2–1+1⁄2 in) in diameter. Its gills are pale yellow, waxy, decurrent, and are spaced somewhat far apart. The bright overall color of the fruitbody fades as it ages, with the exception of the gills and the base of the stipe. The spores of Gloioxanthomyces nitidus are elliptical, smooth, and have dimensions of 6.5–9 by 4–6 μm. This species is distributed in North America, where it grows in groups on the ground, often among mosses, in coniferous or mixed forests. It favors moist habitats including bogs and swamps.
