About Gleichenia rupestris R.Br.
Gleichenia rupestris R.Br. is a small fern native to eastern Australia, and it is counted among the group of plants called coral ferns. Its specific epithet rupestris references its habit of growing near rocks. It is a common plant that is frequently found growing under waterfalls, in swamps, under cliffs, on rocks, and in tall open forest. It prefers habitats with high humidity, ample sunlight, and sufficient moisture. It sometimes grows alongside two related species, Gleichenia dicarpa and Gleichenia microphylla. These two species can be distinguished from Gleichenia rupestris by their rough, hairy stems; the stem of G. rupestris is smooth and glossy. This species was first formally published in scientific literature in Robert Brown's 1810 work Prodromus Florae Novae Hollandiae.
