About Gladiolus murielae Kelway

Gladiolus murielae Kelway is a species of flowering plant in the iris family Iridaceae. It is native to eastern Africa, where its native range extends from Ethiopia to Malawi. This plant has multiple common English names: Abyssinian gladiolus, fragrant gladiolus, peacock gladius, and peacock orchid. It was previously classified in the genus Acidanthera. It is a corm-forming perennial that grows between 70 and 100 cm (28 to 39 inches) tall, with long linear leaves. In late summer, it produces numerous fragrant white flowers that have a maroon (and occasionally orange) blotch in the throat, borne on slender nodding stems. This species is widely cultivated, and is a common garden plant in western and southern European gardens. In these regions, the corms are lifted from the ground each year and stored in frost-free conditions over winter. Gladiolus murielae has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
