About Geum japonicum Thunb.

Geum japonicum Thunb., commonly called Asian herb bennet, is a yellow-flowering perennial plant native to North America and East Asia, with a particular presence in Japan. It may be the same species as Geum macrophyllum, a North American flowering plant. In traditional herbal medicine, it has been used as an astringent and in poultices. In recent years, the Thunberg variant of this species has drawn research interest for other potential medicinal applications. For muscular recovery, Geum japonicum Thunb. extract has been found to support muscle recovery after severe injury. When given after a heart attack, this extract reduces the size of myocardial infarcts by 35 to 45 percent. The extract also shows possible antiviral activity, including effects against HIV and herpes simplex virus (HSV). Research has also noted potential activity against tumors.
