About Geum aleppicum Jacq.

Geum aleppicum Jacq., commonly known as yellow avens or common avens, is a flowering plant native to most of the temperate Northern Hemisphere, ranging from eastern Europe across Asia and North America. It is a herbaceous perennial plant that grows up to 1 meter tall, with pinnate leaves. Its yellow flowers are 2 centimeters in diameter, with five to seven toothed petals. This species is divided into two subspecies: Geum aleppicum subsp. aleppicum, which occurs in Europe and Asia, and Geum aleppicum subsp. strictum, which occurs in North America.

This plant grows in forests, meadows, grassy slopes, river banks, clearings, and along roads. In Europe, it occurs in the Carpathians of Romania and Slovakia, eastern Poland, the Baltic countries, Belarus, Ukraine, and the wider Caucasus region. Its range extends from European Russia east across the southern half of Siberia, south as far as Tienshan, and east to the Pacific coast, with disjunct populations in southern Kamchatka, Sakhalin, and northern Japan. It is widespread in the northern temperate region of China, and can also be found across central parts of the country, extending southwest as far as Yunnan. In North America, its range stretches from Alaska through western and southern Canada, across most US states except the southeast, and south as far as Mexico. It has been introduced to Scandinavia and New Zealand.
