This species, Geukensia granosissima, has ribbed shells that can reach a maximum length of 10 centimeters. It is native to the Atlantic coast of North America. Southern ribbed mussels, the common name for this species, occur in the Florida Keys, the Caribbean, and the Gulf of Mexico. The closely related ribbed mussel species Geukensia demissa is found along the Atlantic coast further north than the range of Geukensia granosissima.
