Gerrhonotus liocephalus was first described by Wiegmann in 1828. It has three common English names: the Texas alligator lizard and Wiegmann's alligator lizard, and it is called la culebra con pata in Spanish. This lizard species is a member of the family Anguidae. It is native to Texas, Mexico, and Guatemala. Three subspecies of Gerrhonotus liocephalus are currently recognized. Its preferred natural habitats are forest and shrubland. Gerrhonotus liocephalus reproduces by laying eggs, meaning it is oviparous.
