About Geocarpon uniflorum (Walter) E.E.Schill.
Geocarpon uniflorum, commonly called one-flower stitchwort, is a flowering plant species belonging to the family Caryophyllaceae. It is native to the Southeastern United States, where it occurs primarily in the Piedmont region. Its preferred habitat consists of sandy or granitic rock outcrops. Plants that were formerly named Minuartia alabamensis have been confirmed to be a self-pollinating form of Geocarpon uniflorum that evolved independently across multiple locations, so this taxon is now included within Geocarpon uniflorum. Genetic research has indicated that this species is most appropriately classified in the genus Mononeuria, though this classification has not been widely accepted. In 2022, the species was reclassified into the genus Geocarpon. This species can be told apart from the closely related Geocarpon glabrum by its shorter leaves and petals that lack a clawed shape.
