About Gentiana linearis Froel.

Gentiana linearis Froel., commonly called narrowleaf gentian, is a flowering plant in the Gentianaceae family that reaches 1 to 2 feet (30 to 61 centimeters) in height. It is native to northeastern North America, ranging from Manitoba to Maine, and also grows in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia, Virginia, and Tennessee. Like other bottle gentians such as Gentiana clausa and Gentiana andrewsii, it has paired lanceolate leaves that typically grow on unbranched stalks, and produces blue or purple flowers that stay closed or nearly closed. As its specific scientific name linearis suggests, the leaves of this species are narrower than the leaves of related bottle gentians.
