About Gemma gemma (Totten, 1834)

The amethyst gem clam, with the scientific name Gemma gemma, is a very small species of saltwater clam. It is a marine bivalve mollusk that belongs to Veneridae, the Venus clam family. This small species grows to reach a maximum length of only 5 millimeters. Its shell is whitish or grayish, with a purple tint covering both the outer and inner surfaces. Gemma gemma is native to the Atlantic coast of North America, where it ranges from Labrador to Texas. It has also been introduced to and now occurs in certain locations along the Pacific coast of North America.
