About Gecarcoidea lalandii H.Milne Edwards, 1837
Gecarcoidea lalandii is a large species of terrestrial crab. This species is dark purple, with long legs and short pincers. It is nocturnal, so it spends most of the day hiding in burrows. Compared to the closely related species G. natalis, G. lalandii has a relatively widespread distribution: it occurs in the Indo-Pacific region, starting from the Andaman Islands and extending eastwards. Adult G. lalandii mainly live in forests, but can sometimes be found in more open habitats. When females are carrying eggs, they migrate to the coast and release their eggs in the tidal zone. Small adult G. lalandii are sometimes preyed on by the crab Geograpsus crinipes.
