About Gavicalis versicolor (Gould, 1843)

The varied honeyeater, with the scientific name Gavicalis versicolor, is a bird species that belongs to the honeyeater family Meliphagidae. This species can be found in coastal regions of New Guinea, as well as in the eastern part of Cape York Peninsula, which is located in Queensland, Australia. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical mangrove forests. Before 2011, the varied honeyeater was classified under the genus Lichenostomus. It was moved to the genus Gavicalis after 2011 molecular phylogenetic analysis demonstrated that the original genus Lichenostomus was polyphyletic.
