About Gauromydas heros (Perty, 1833)

Gauromydas heros (Perty, 1833) is the largest known fly species. Adults of this species can reach 7 centimetres (2.8 inches) in length, with a wingspan of about 10 centimetres (3.9 inches). Its wing membrane is whitish, brown, or orange, with a hyaline apex and a hyaline posterior margin. This species is Neotropical in distribution, and can be found in Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Colombia. In Colombia, two populations have been detected: one in Villavicencio, Department of Meta, and one in Manizales, Department of Caldas. However, it is possible that the Colombian populations of Gauromydas heros actually belong to a separate, different species.
