About Gasteracantha geminata (Fabricius, 1798)

The scientific name of this species is Gasteracantha geminata (Fabricius, 1798). Unlike species with strong sexual dimorphism, both male and female Gasteracantha geminata have black and white transverse bands across the abdomen. The abdomen bears three pairs of long, stout lateral spines. Females of this species have a heavily sclerotized, spiny abdomen, which is a shared characteristic of the entire Gasteracantha genus. Females also have a variable number of sigillae on both the dorsal and ventral surfaces of the abdomen. Males are somewhat smaller than females, have less distinct coloration, and have smaller, less developed abdominal spines.
