About Garrulax maximus (J.Verreaux, 1870)

The giant laughingthrush, a bird species in the family Leiothrichidae, is found in central China, far northern India, and Myanmar. Its natural habitat is temperate forests. This species was originally described as Garrulax maximus by J. Verreaux in 1870, and was long placed in the genus Garrulax. After a comprehensive molecular phylogenetic study was published in 2018, it was moved to the resurrected genus Ianthocincla, where it is classified as Ianthocincla maxima. Females typically lay between 1 and 3 blue eggs. Both parents incubate the eggs for a period of two weeks. This species can be identified by its sweet, melodious, bold call.
