About Garrulax berthemyi (Oustalet, 1876)

The buffy laughingthrush, also called the chestnut-winged laughingthrush, has the scientific name Pterorhinus berthemyi, and it is a bird species belonging to the family Leiothrichidae. It was previously classified as a subspecies of the rusty laughingthrush, P. poecilorhynchus. After the taxonomic split, the rusty laughingthrush is now restricted to Taiwan. When compared to the rusty laughingthrush, the buffy laughingthrush has paler grey underparts, more contrasting rufous wings, broader white tips on its tail, and distinct black lores. This species was originally placed in the genus Garrulax, but after a comprehensive molecular phylogenetic study was published in 2018, it was moved to the resurrected genus Pterorhinus.
