About Gambusia rhizophorae Rivas, 1969
This species, scientifically named Gambusia rhizophorae Rivas, 1969, is commonly known as the mangrove gambusia. It is a brackish-water fish that typically lives in sheltered mangrove forests. In Florida, the species is distributed from Fort Lauderdale south along the mainland coast, and spans the entire Florida Keys all the way to Key West. Research indicates its distribution within Florida appears to be limited by temperature, as noted by Getter in 1982. The exact locations of the known Cuban population of Gambusia rhizophorae are currently under examination, to enable production of a complete distribution map for the species.
