It occurs in the South African provinces of KwaZulu-Natal and the Northern Provinces, as well as in Mozambique, Eswatini, and Zimbabwe. The genus name Galpinia honors Ernest Edward Galpin (1858–1941), a South African botanist and banker. The species-specific epithet transvaalica refers to Transvaal, a historic region of South Africa.
