About Galpinia transvaalica N.E.Br.
Galpinia is a monotypic genus of flowering plants in the family Lythraceae, meaning it contains only one species: Galpinia transvaalica N.E.Br. This species is native to tropical and Southern Africa. It occurs in the South African provinces of KwaZulu-Natal and the Northern Provinces, as well as in Mozambique, Eswatini, and Zimbabwe. The genus name Galpinia honors Ernest Edward Galpin (1858–1941), a South African botanist and banker. The species-specific epithet transvaalica refers to Transvaal, a historic region of South Africa. This plant was first described and published in 1894 in the Bulletin of Miscellaneous Information at Kew, on page 345 of the 1894 issue.
