About Gallowayella fulva (Hoffm.) S.Y.Kondr., Fedorenko, S.Stenroos, Kärnefelt, Elix, Hur & A.Thell
Gallowayella fulva is a foliose lichen species that belongs to the family Teloschistaceae. It was first formally described scientifically in 1796 by German lichenologist Georg Franz Hoffmann, who originally placed it in the genus Lobaria. Throughout its taxonomic history, it has also been reclassified into the genera Oxneria, Xanthomendoza, and Xanthoria. In 2012, Sergey Kondratyuk and his colleagues moved this species to the genus Gallowayella. This transfer followed a restructuring of several genera within the subfamily Xanthorioideae of Teloschistaceae, which was based on molecular phylogenetics research. In North America, a common vernacular name for this species is the bare-bottomed sunburst lichen. Gallowayella fulva has a wide distribution, and can be found in Asia, Europe, and North America. It most commonly grows on bark, particularly from oak and elm trees, though there are rare recorded instances of it growing on rock.
