About Galaxias brevipinnis Günther, 1866

This fish species has the scientific name Galaxias brevipinnis Günther, 1866. It is commonly called climbing galaxias in Australia, and kōaro or koaro in New Zealand. Additional common vernacular names are short-finned galaxias, broad-finned galaxias, Cox's mountain galaxias, and Pieman galaxias. It is a member of the Galaxiidae family, found in Australia, New Zealand, and nearby islands. Its distribution covers coastal streams in southeastern Australia, ranging from Adelaide and Kangaroo Island in South Australia, through coastal Victoria including Wilsons Promontory, Tasmania, Flinders Island, and King Island, and north along the New South Wales coast to around the Sydney area. This fish's strong climbing ability allows it to live in stream headwaters that cannot be reached by introduced species like trout.
