About Gaillardia amblyodon J.Gay

Gaillardia amblyodon J.Gay, commonly called lanceleaf blanketflower or maroon blanketflower, is a species of flowering plant in the aster family. So far, it has only been found growing in Texas, a state in the south-central United States. It occupies open, sunlit places with sandy soil. This plant is an annual herb that grows up to 45 cm (18 inches) tall, with leafy stems. Each of its flower heads grows individually on a flower stalk that can reach up to 15 cm (5.9 inches) long. Every flower head holds 8 to 12 ray flowers that are most often red or purple, and very rarely yellow. These ray flowers surround 30 to 60 disc flowers that are yellow with purple-colored tips. This species appears to be closely related to G. pulchella, a species with a much wider distribution.
