About Gaeana maculata (Drury, 1773)
Upper side: The head is black. The eyes are yellow-brown, round, and project slightly from the head; two small orange spots are located between the eyes. The antennae are small and short. The thorax is black, with four orange spots arranged in a crosswise row, and another two orange spots behind this row. The abdomen is black, made up of seven rings in addition to the tail segment; the outermost ring is edged with orange. The anus is orange, and bears an oviposition bristle. The wings are black, with orange spots and streaks; the forewings have a row of streaks along their outer edges, and five distinct orange spots crossing the middle near the shoulder region. The hindwings have a large orange patch on their abdominal edges, a small round spot above this patch, and five smaller, fainter spots along the outer edges. Under side: The head is black, ending in a long slender beak that extends between the legs to the abdomen; two small orange spots sit just below the eyes. The thorax has an orange spot on each side. The legs and abdomen are black; the abdomen has six orange spots total, three on each side. The underside of the wings matches the appearance of the upper side. The total wingspan is 3¾ inches (95 mm).
