About Fromia schultzei Döderlein, 1910

The scientific name of this species is Fromia schultzei Döderlein, 1910. This large starfish typically has five arms. Its total diameter is usually around 100 mm (4 inches), while its individual arms measure 14 mm (1 inch) in length. The arms are broad at their base, tapering gradually toward a rounded, upturned tip. Its upper surface is covered in small bumps, giving the starfish a granular texture. The body color ranges from dark orange and red to purplish. In the adambulacral areas, this species has only a few spines, and the spines that are present are arranged in a regular pattern. This regular spine arrangement helps distinguish Fromia schultzei from Nardoa tuberculata, another starfish species that also occurs in South African waters.
