About Fritillaria sewerzowii Regel
Fritillaria sewerzowii Regel grows to a height of 20–50 cm. It produces egg-shaped bulbs that are approximately 5 cm in diameter. Its leaves are fleshy; the leaves at the base of the stem are broadly oval, with leaves reaching up to 15 cm in length and evenly distributed along the length of the stem. This species produces 4 to 10 individual purple-brown, star-shaped flowers that measure 3 cm in length. The flowers grow from the leaf axes on the upper portion of the stem. Fritillaria sewerzowii blooms in early March. In the wild, it is native to Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, where it grows in scrub on rocky slopes or lightly wooded areas, at altitudes between 1000 and 3000 metres. For cultivation, it is winter hardy in USDA zones 4 to 8, but it requires well drained soil to grow successfully.
