It is native to Xinjiang (China), Russia (including Altay Krai, Western Siberia Krai, European Russia, and North Caucasus), Kazakhstan, Ukraine, and Bulgaria. This species is a bulb-forming perennial that grows up to 40 centimeters tall. Its leaves are linear, arranged alternately, and can reach up to 15 centimeters in length. Its flowers are nodding (hanging), bell-shaped, and colored dark purple or brownish-purple.
