About Fritillaria lusitanica Wikstr.
Fritillaria lusitanica Wikstr. is a species of flowering plant in the lily family Liliaceae, and it is endemic to the Iberian Peninsula. It is a herbaceous perennial that grows from a bulb. Its flowers are nodding (hanging) and purple, and sometimes have a green stripe along the center of each tepal. Populations of this species are scattered, and usually occur as small groups of individuals in the central and southwestern regions of the Iberian Peninsula. Two subspecies are currently recognized: Fritillaria lusitanica subsp. lusitanica and Fritillaria lusitanica subsp. stenophylla (Boiss. & Reut.) K.Richt. A number of taxa that were previously described as varieties or subspecies of Fritillaria lusitanica are now classified as separate species. These previously included taxa are: Fritillaria lusitanica var. algeriensis, now reclassified as Fritillaria oranensis; Fritillaria lusitanica subsp. macrocarpa, now reclassified as Fritillaria macrocarpa; Fritillaria lusitanica var. neglecta, now reclassified as Fritillaria messanensis subsp. neglecta; Fritillaria lusitanica subsp. neglecta, now reclassified as Fritillaria messanensis subsp. neglecta; and Fritillaria lusitanica subsp. oranensis, now reclassified as Fritillaria oranensis.
