About Fritillaria gentneri Gilkey
Gentner's fritillary, Fritillaria gentneri Gilkey, grows 50–70 cm (20–28 in) tall. It has glaucous stems with whorls of leaves, and bears nodding reddish flowers that are checkered with yellow. The tepals of its flowers have reflexed tips. This plant can be distinguished from Fritillaria recurva by its spreading style, longer more conspicuous glands, and generally unrecurved tepal tips. There has been longstanding disagreement over whether this taxon should be treated as a full species. Some evidence suggests it may instead be a hybrid between Fritillaria affinis and Fritillaria recurva. As of now, it is officially listed as a separate species in the Flora of North America and the Manual of Higher Plants of Oregon.
