This species is the Christmas frigatebird, with the scientific name Fregata andrewsi Mathews, 1914. It measures 89โ€“100 cm (35โ€“39 in) in length, has a wingspan of 205โ€“230 cm (81โ€“91 in), and weighs around 1,550 g (3.42 lb). Adult male Christmas frigatebirds are easily identified: they are entirely black except for a white patch on the belly. Other plumage types of this species resemble the smaller lesser frigatebird, but have whiter bellies and longer white underwing spurs.
