About Frasera tubulosa Coville
Frasera tubulosa Coville is a perennial herb that ranges in height from just a few centimeters tall to around one meter at maximum. Its pointed, lance-shaped basal leaves grow up to 9 centimeters long. The leaves are green with white margins, and they typically have downcurved tips. Smaller leaves are arranged in whorls higher up on the stem. At the top of the stem is an open panicle inflorescence holding the plant’s flowers. Each individual flower has a calyx made of four pointed sepals, and a bell-shaped corolla with four pointed lobes, each lobe roughly one centimeter long. The corolla is white or blue-tinged, marked with light blue veining. Each flower has four stamens tipped with large anthers and a central ovary. This gentian species is endemic to California, and is only found in the southern Sierra Nevada, primarily within Sequoia National Forest and Sequoia National Park. It grows in open mountain areas, as well as in foothill chaparral and woodland habitats.
