About Forsythia suspensa (Thunb.) Vahl
Forsythia suspensa (Thunb.) Vahl is a deciduous shrub that grows up to 3 metres (9.8 feet) tall. It produces golden-yellow flowers that bloom from March to April, and its simple green leaves are broadly ovate in shape. It can be grown as a weeping shrub along stream banks, and can be distinguished by its pale blooms. Cultivated varieties of this species exist for garden use. It is a spring-flowering yellow shrub, grown and valued for its hardiness. Before Forsythia × intermedia was confirmed as a true wild native Chinese species, F. suspensa was considered one of its parent species. Forsythia suspensa is native to China, and has been introduced to Japan, Spain, Bulgaria, Czechia, Slovakia, Korea, and multiple regions of the United States. It naturally grows in thickets or grassy areas on slopes and in valleys. It is counted among the 50 fundamental herbs used in traditional Chinese medicine, and contains the lignans pinoresinol and phillyrin.
