The mottled triplefin, scientifically named Forsterygion malcolmi, is a triplefin species belonging to the genus Forsterygion. This fish is found around reef areas made of broken rock around New Zealand, and can live at depths of up to 30 meters. Its specific epithet, malcolmi, honors Malcolm Francis of the Wellington, New Zealand-based Fisheries Research Centre, who accompanied Hardy on specimen collection trips. This species was first formally described by Hardy in 1987.
