About Forpus modestus (Cabanis, 1848)
The dusky-billed parrotlet, which also goes by the common name Sclater's parrotlet, has the scientific name Forpus modestus (Cabanis, 1848). It is a small parrot species belonging to the family Psittacidae. The currently recognized form is the nominate subspecies F. m. modestus, and one additional subspecies, Forpus modestus sclateri, is recognized.
This parrotlet is found in South America, primarily in the Amazon rainforest, where it is locally fairly common. Its range also includes the Andes, the Amazonian foothills, the Amazon River outlet, and Marajo Island. It does not occur at altitudes above 1,000 metres (3,300 ft) above sea level. Preferred habitats for the dusky-billed parrotlet include lowland tropical rainforest edges and clearings, riparian zones, secondary habitats, and savanna. The species appears to favor seasonally-flooding forests.
For dusky-billed parrotlets, breeding typically occurs in July. They nest in tree cavities or similar structures. While the average clutch size is unknown, their eggs are small, white, and roughly spherical in shape.
