About Fomitopsis schrenkii Haight & Nakasone

Fomitopsis schrenkii is a perennial woody conk with a fan-like shape. Its surface is smooth and may be resinous, and it typically has a bumpy margin. Its colour normally follows a consistent pattern: the base is whitish orange, which darkens to solid orange or brown, then lightens to creamy-white at the margins. Older specimens darken to grey or brown, and their colour bands become less visible but remain distinct. When broken open, the woody context inside the conk is light yellow or tan, with no distinct internal bands. The underside of the conk is light yellow or white, and has 3-4 round pores per millimetre. This species stains reddish or light brown when treated with KOH.
