Fistularia tabacaria Linnaeus, 1758, commonly called cornetfish, reaches a maximum total length of 200 cm (79 in), while most individuals only grow to 120 cm (47 in). This species is easily confused with needlefish. The key feature distinguishing cornetfish from needlefish is that cornetfish have a smaller mouth and jaws paired with an elongated face, while needlefish have elongated jaws and mouths. Cornetfish of this species are greenish-brown along their back, and have pale blue spots and lines across their body.
