About Ferdinandea cuprea (Scopoli, 1763)

This species is Ferdinandea cuprea (Scopoli, 1763). Adults have a wing length between 7.25 and 11.25 mm. The dorsum of the thorax is black, covered in grey dust, and marked with strong, distinct longitudinal black stripes. The abdomen is greenish, with dull bands that connect to its hind margin. The wings have dark marks, and the arista is black. Male genitalia of this species were figured by Coe in 1953. Larvae were illustrated by Hartley in 1961 and by Rotheray in 1993; Rotheray's 1993 illustrations of larvae are in colour. This species has a Palaearctic distribution: its range extends from Fennoscandia south to southern Spain, the Mediterranean basin, and Turkey; it is present in Ireland, and ranges east through Northern Europe and Central Europe all the way to the Pacific coast of Siberia and Japan.
