About Felimida purpurea (Risso, 1831)

Felimida purpurea is a chromodorid nudibranch. Its mantle ranges in color from plain white to pale purple, and is edged with an orange-yellow line. Just inside this yellow margin, conspicuous white mantle glands are embedded in the mantle tissue. The rhinophores and gills are purple-pink with white tips. The body of Felimida purpurea reaches a length between 35 mm and 50 mm. In a revision of the family Chromodorididae, this species was moved from the genus Chromodoris to the genus Felimida. DNA analysis showed that Atlantic species previously classified as Chromodoris form a distinct clade, supporting this taxonomic change. This species is distributed in the Mediterranean Sea, along the Atlantic coasts of Europe and Africa from the Bay of Biscay to Cape Verde, and as far west as the Azores.
