About Faxonius rusticus (Girard, 1852)
Adults of Faxonius rusticus, commonly known as rusty crayfish, can grow up to 10 centimeters (4 inches) in total length, and reach sexual maturity at approximately 4.4 centimeters (1.7 inches) long. Their body color ranges from greenish grey to reddish brown. Rusty crayfish can be identified by two variable, rusty reddish spots located on the sides of the posterior section of their carapace, as well as their large front claws that have black bands around the tips. Like other male astacoid crayfish, reproductive Form I male rusty crayfish have small hook-like structures called copulatory stylets. These structures are located on the ischia of the third pair of pereopods, and they are used to grip the female during mating.
