About Favratia zoysii (Wulfen) Feer
Favratia zoysii (Wulfen) Feer is a generally low-growing plant, reaching between 5 to 7 cm (2 to 3 in) in height, though some individual plants can grow as tall as 23 cm (9 in). As it grows, it forms creeping tufts, also referred to as "cushions", that spread outwards. Seedlings of this species take two years of growth before they can produce flowers. This plant is endemic to Austria, northern Italy (specifically the regions of Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Veneto), and Slovenia. It grows best in limestone crevices of the Julian Alps, Kamnik–Savinja Alps, Peca Mountain, and the dolomitic Alps of Italy and Austria. A white-flowered cultivar of this species (previously classified under the genus Campanula as C. zoysii), named 'Lismore Ice', was cultivated from seeds collected in the Julian Alps. This cultivar has much more compact growth than the purple-flowered form of the species. It is also slower growing, has smaller leaves, and the tips of its leaves are yellow. Favratia zoysii can tolerate minimum temperatures between −35 to −40 °C (−31 to −40 °F). Common garden pests that affect this plant are slugs and snails.
