About Fascellina chromataria Walker, 1860

This species is Fascellina chromataria Walker, 1860. The wingspan of males is 38 mm, while the wingspan of females is 44 mm. On male forewings, the outer and inner margins are excised toward the outer angle. Male hindwings have a more or less truncate and excised costa and apex. Cilia are non-crenulate. The male body is deep reddish-brown with an olive shade, and is slightly suffused with purplish grey. The wings have dark striae. The forewing costa is grey. There is an oblique antemedial line angled below the costa, and a yellow spot at the end of the cell, which often has a hyaline center. Traces of a postmedial line are visible. A curved, waved purplish-grey submarginal line is present, angled below the costa, and this line becomes the postmedial line on the hindwings. On the ventral side of the forewings, the basal half is yellow and the outer area is brown, with bright reddish brown inside the postmedial line. This postmedial line is prominent, angled, and purple, or has a quadrate sinus below the costa and is often waved toward the inner margin. Hindwings are yellow, with the outer area suffused and striated with rufous. An indistinct postmedial line and a curved crenulate submarginal line are present on the hindwings. Females are very similar to males, but differ in being much redder in overall color. The larva is purplish black, with irregular purple-red markings on the thoracic segments. The head is cleft and produced into two papillae. Recorded host plants for the larvae include species of the genera Lindera, Cinnamomum, Machilus, and Illicium.
