This is a description of Falco rupicolus Daudin, 1800, which is a slender, medium-sized kestrel. Individuals measure between 30 and 33 centimeters in height. Adult males of this species weigh between 183 grams and 254 grams, while adult females weigh between 190 grams and 280 grams. The species ranges from Angola, moving south through the Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania, extending as far south as South Africa, and is present across most of the land between these areas. Notable regions where the species is scarce include northern and northeastern Namibia, Botswana, southern Mozambique, and tropical Lowveld. In Zimbabwe, the species is restricted to high-lying central and eastern regions. The kestrel is typically associated with arid areas, though it can also be found in open areas and/or semi-arid areas.
