About Exeirus lateritius Shuckard, 1838

Exeirus lateritius (Shuckard, 1838), commonly called the Australian cicada killer wasp, is the only species in the genus Exeirus. It is a large, solitary, ground-dwelling predatory wasp, and is related to Sphecius, the more common genus of cicada killers. In Australia, this wasp hunts more than 200 different species of cicada. These wasps live in warm, dry locations that have enough trees to support cicada populations. Known ranges include the Murray-Darling basin, the south-east coast of the Australian mainland (including Sydney), and Tasmania.
