About Euspira heros (Say, 1822)
Euspira heros (Say, 1822) has a globular shell that can reach up to 125 mm (4.9 inches) in length under favorable conditions. Its operculum is large, ear-shaped in outline, corneous, and somewhat transparent. On beaches where shells of this species commonly wash ashore, the opercula are also typically found washed up in the drift line. The distribution of Euspira heros ranges from 51.5°N to 33°N latitude, and 76°W to 65°W longitude. This western Atlantic species is found in Canada (Labrador, Gulf of St. Lawrence, Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick) and the United States (Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina). A closely related sibling species, Neverita lewisii, lives on the Pacific coast of North America. This species inhabits sand substrates in the infralittoral zone, circalittoral zone, and estuaries. It can be found from the surface down to depths of up to 435 m (1,427 ft).
