About Eurytides dolicaon (Cramer, 1775)

Eurytides dolicaon (Cramer, 1775) is a large butterfly with a wingspan of approximately 80 millimetres (3.1 inches). The base colour of its wings is creamy white, with black veins running across the surface. The hindwings feature very long, thin tails that are typically dark brown or black, ending in yellow tips. The outer edges of the upper surfaces of the wings are dark brown or black. The undersides of the hindwings have brown bands that create large distinct creamy white areas. A series of blue crescent-shaped lunules runs along the margins of the hindwings. The larvae of Eurytides dolicaon feed on plants from the Guatteria and Ocotea genera, as well as Nectandra membranacea. This butterfly is distributed across Central and South America, including Guyana, south-eastern Brazil, Paraguay, Peru, eastern Colombia, eastern Ecuador, and north-western Venezuela. It inhabits lowland wet rainforest areas, found at elevations between roughly 0 and 400 metres (0 to 1,312 feet) above sea level.
