About Eurycea multiplicata (Cope, 1869)

The many-ribbed salamander, with the scientific name Eurycea multiplicata, is a species of salamander belonging to the family Plethodontidae, and it is endemic to the United States. Its natural habitats include temperate forests, rivers, freshwater springs, inland karsts, and caves. Its endemic distribution is restricted to eastern Oklahoma, southwestern Missouri, northwestern Arkansas, and the area of Cherokee County, Kansas. Reproduction for this species occurs in water, and long-distance migrations are considered unlikely. Populations living in thermally stable springs have a longer mating season than populations living in surface streams, which have more variable temperatures. Based on the timing when females carried spermatozoa in their reproductive tracts, mating activity can occur between July and May.
