About Euploea tulliolus (Fabricius, 1793)

Euploea tulliolus, commonly called the dwarf crow, small brown crow, or purple crow, is a butterfly species that belongs to the danaid group (the crows and tigers) of the brush-footed butterflies family. This butterfly is found in the Solomon Islands, Malaysia, Taiwan, Vietnam, Singapore, and Australia, with a wingspan of about 4 to 8 centimeters. It gains the alternative common name purple crow from the purple iridescence its wings show under sunlight. The Taiwanese population of this species performs a regular mass migration, traveling from northern Taiwan to southern Taiwan and back each year. During the migration, protective netting is placed on the main highway that blocks the butterflies' route. Butterfly numbers are tracked, and traffic is restricted during the peak of the swarm's crossing.
