About Euplectes macroura (Gmelin, 1789)

This species has the scientific name Euplectes macroura (Gmelin, 1789). Males of the species are larger than females. During the breeding season, males grow longer tails and develop a striking plumage of black and golden yellow. The mantle of breeding males is golden yellow for most populations, but the northeastern subspecies E. m. macrocercus has a black mantle. Yellow shoulder markings are present in all male plumages, both breeding and non-breeding. The species' natural habitat is subtropical or tropical seasonally wet or flooded lowland grassland, and it occurs across a wide intra-tropical range.
