This species is endemic to the United States, where it occurs only on the Hawaiian islands of Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Maui, Lanai, and Hawaii. In terms of its ecology, the caterpillar larvae of Eupithecia monticolens feed on Alphitonia ponderosa, Metrosideros, Pipturus, Railliardia, and Styphelia tameiameiae.
